Welcome to Kirra Surf Lifesaving Club!

Kirra Surf Life Saving Club is the second oldest club in Queensland and owes its beginnings to a tragedy that occured on January 6th, 1916.

On that day two friends went swimming on the unpatrolled beach and immediately got into trouble. Sadly one of the friends drowned. The local community acted swiftly and a public meeting was called on January 7th 1916 where it was decided that the Kirra Surf Life Saving Club be formed.

The Mission statement for the Kirra SLSC is;
“to serve the bathing public of Kirra beach and its surrounding areas by protecting life, preserving safety and preventing incidents by proactive and contemporary lifesaving practices through vigilance and service.”

The club will celebrate it’s 100th Anniversary in 2016.

New Proficiency Paper online

This year SLSQ is excited to launch into online learning capabilities for our member education.  The main aim of providing on-line learning is to provide the following benefits:

  1. Flexibility – for members to participate in learning in their own time at their own pace
  2. More hands on training – as participants complete more theoretical learning in their own time, this means that more time can be spent on practical training when at the surf club
  3. Environmentally Friendly – by completing theory activities on-line, less paper based education materials need to be produced to conduct the course
  4. Automatic self marking – activities completed on-line will be self marking which means Trainers and Assessors can spend more time on practical components of a course and less time on the dreaded paper based administrative side of a course

SLSQ is starting off slow by trialing it’s online capacity by providing the 2011/2012 Proficiency Paper online for members to complete in their own time.

Please click on the link for instructions and online paper: http://www.lifesaving.com.au/default.asp?contentID=898

Paper copies of the Proficiency Paper will be available at the club on the day.

Nippers

 Meet Junior Activities Co-ordinator

Anthony Cassone better know as ‘Chocko’

JAC

Free rashie to all members! Click here for Kirra Nippers Sign On dates.

Kirra is a club that prides itself on its fun family environment where all the kids get a fair go. Our ratio of Age Managers to children is small, therefore all children get to participate in all activities every Sunday.

The nipper Sunday program begins at 08:30 with sign on ready for a 08:45 start and has the U6-U8, U9-U10, U11-U12 and U13-U14 age groups rotating through Beach, Water 1(Surf Swim skills), Water 2 (Boards) and Awards and Education ‘stations’ in 30 minute blocks. Activities range from body boarding, using soft nipper foamies, hard nipper paddle boards, beach sprints, flags, fun games and activities as well as education on water safety, resuscitation, etc. We finish at 11:00 with a barbecue on the lawns at the front of the club house. U6-U8 age group finish at 10:45 depending on conditions and levels of enthusiasm…

Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) has a set of competency based awards for each age group. The nipper program aims to teach all the competencies to the juniors over the season so that each nipper receives the award (certificate) applicable to their age group. Our goals are aligned with SLSA Junior development objectives which are;
• To provide the best possible lifesaving experience for all juniors with the view to encouraging long-term active participation.
• To provide opportunities for juniors to participate in and enjoy lifesaving and competition in an aquatic environment by offering a wide variety of activities suited to the skill and maturation levels of all juniors.
• To ensure the juniors are safe on Australia’s beaches through the provision of surf safety education programs.
• To develop a team based philosophy encompassing leadership, camaraderie, teamwork, and fun.
• To promote social, emotional and physical growth and development in a healthy and safe environment.
For more information about the SLSA Nipper program, click here…
